ASSISTING INDIVIDUALS IN CRISIS

Crisis Intervention is NOT psychotherapy; rather, it is a specialized acute emergency mental health intervention which requires specialized training. This program is designed to teach participants the fundamentals of, and a specific protocol for, individual crisis intervention.
- Psychological crisis and psychological crisis intervention
- Resistance, resiliency, recovery continuum
- Critical incident stress management
- Evidence-based practice
- Basic crisis communication techniques
- Common psychological and behavioral crisis reactions
- Putative and empirically-derived mechanisms
- SAFER-Revised model
- Suicide intervention
- Risks of iatrogenic “harm”

MEET THE CERTIFIED INSTRUCTOR
LORETTA McGUIRE
Loretta McGuire serves as the Executive Director of Ribbon of Hope, Inc., a nonprofit, faith-based ministry dedicated to addressing the emotional, spiritual, and practical (non-medical) needs of individuals in the community facing a cancer diagnosis. Her team supports approximately 700 adult patients each year who live or work in Elkhart County or receive treatment there.
Loretta’s first exposure to the ICISF came through a crisis debriefing following the unexpected and traumatic loss of a close friend. This experience had a profound impact on her and inspired her to pursue advanced training in Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM). Since beginning her training with ICISF in 2005, Loretta has logged thousands of hours conducting peer-to-peer and group crisis interventions, defusings, and crisis management briefings.
As an ICISF Certified Instructor, she has expanded access to core CISM training within her community, making it more accessible to first responders, chaplains, emergency management professionals, and personnel managers without the need for extensive travel.
Outside of her professional work, Loretta enjoys spending time with her husband, David, a retired officer with the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, as well as their five children and seven grandchildren. She and David also enjoy both domestic and international travel.
